Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) announced Thursday night he will resign from office. Franks initially said his last day in office would be Jan. 31, 2018, but on Friday he said that his wife had been admitted to the hospital Thursday night, and as a result, "the best thing for our family now would be for me to tender my previous resignation effective today." In his Thursday statement, Franks explained he was resigning due to a conversation he had had with two female employees; three Republicans who spoke to The Washington Post said Franks asked the staffers if they would serve as surrogates for him and his wife. "I deeply regret that my discussion of this option and process in the workplace caused distress," Franks said.
