President Trump on Monday told reporters that, as far as he's concerned, peace negotiations with the Taliban are "dead," echoing earlier comments from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Trump canceled secret meetings with Taliban leaders and, separately, Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani, which were apparently scheduled for Sunday at Camp David. The president called off the talks after the Taliban claimed responsibility for a recent attack in Afghanistan that killed a U.S. soldier and 11 others. In response, the Taliban said the decision would "lead to more losses" for the U.S. The possibility of an agreement between the two sides, which would have ended with the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, no longer seems likely after the parties had seemingly reached an agreement on a draft proposal.
