David Crosby:Croz

David Crosby’s first solo album in 21 years is “a gorgeous listen,” said Walter Tunis in the Lexington, Ky., Herald-Leader. Decades removed from his reputation-making work with the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, and Nash, the 72-year-old performer sounds less like a folk-rock survivor confronting mortality than “a vital, worldly, and adult songsmith happily reaching out of his comfort zone.” His familiar voice “remains sweet, sometimes airy,” and the arrangements here “take advantage of both qualities,” said Stephen Thomas Erlewine in AllMusic.com. A few tracks “conjure ghosts of CSN’s early-’80s soft rock,” but Crosby and the keyboardist son who’s his chief collaborator here usually avoid that rut, “allowing the music to amiably drift and linger.” Though the two are apparently “too dedicated to tasty, in-the-pocket grooves” to let Croz become a true heir to 1971’s If I Could Only Remember My Name, some of that record’s searching quality comes through. Crosby doesn’t mind trying out new material, as long as he can do it in “cozy, familiar settings.”
