Today in history: January 22

President Jefferson exposed the Burr Conspiracy, LBJ passed away, and more

Jan. 22, 1807: President Thomas Jefferson told Congress of the Burr Conspiracy — the treason charges leveled against his former Vice President Aaron Burr. Jefferson told Congress that Burr tried to split several states from the Union and make himself ruler; Jefferson called for fair trials for all involved.

Jan. 22, 1944: President Franklin Roosevelt established the War Refugee Board to assist anyone fleeing Nazi atrocities in Europe.

Jan. 22, 1973. Lyndon Johnson died. He was the 36th president, serving between 1963 and 1969. Sworn in on Air Force One following President Kennedy's assassination, Johnson is remembered for both his "Great Society" and the Vietnam War. The "Great Society" saw passage of landmark legislation to expand civil rights, fight poverty and establish Medicare and Medicaid. As for Vietnam, Johnson oversaw a massive escalation of U.S. troops, from 16,000 in 1963 to 538,000 in 1968. The war was so divisive that Johnson was challenged for the Democratic nomination in 1968 by Senators Eugene McCarthy and Robert Kennedy. LBJ quit the race.

Quote of the Day

"The presidency has made every man who occupied it, no matter how small, bigger than he was; and no matter how big, not big enough for its demands." — Lyndon B. Johnson
