Watch Sydney, Australia, kick off 2014 with a stunning fireworks display

The 12-minute extravaganza began at 7 a.m. EST in the United States

Dreading the idea of another awkward New Year's Eve party, or the prospect of fighting to grab a meager glass of champagne at an overcrowded bar? You could always readjust your watch to Sydney time and consider your New Year's Eve over and done with.

Revelers in Australia rang in 2014 at 7 a.m. EST in the United States, as many Americans were still scrambling to throw together their New Year's plans. The stunning 12-minute fireworks display launched over the Sydney Harbor might make you think twice about staying up to watch the ball drop in Times Square.

The Aussies weren't even the first ones to toast the New Year. At 5 a.m. EST, thousands of New Zealanders celebrated with a fireworks display at Auckland's Sky Tower. With a host of other countries slated to reach January 2014 before the United States does, we're in for a full day of celebrations.

And the best may be yet to come: At 2 p.m. EST, Dubai will mount what is reportedly the largest fireworks display in history.
