Hotel of the week: Volcano House

The only hotel in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park “has finally got its spark back.”

Hawaii County, Hawaii

The only hotel in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park “has finally got its spark back,” said Jeanne Cooper in the San Francisco Chronicle. Built in 1941 to replace the fire-damaged original, Volcano House was long neglected. When it closed for a refresh in 2010, “the spectacular view of Kilauea”—one of two active nearby volcanoes—“was about all the 33-room hotel had going for it.” Today, it’s clean and comfortable, and locally sourced fish, game, and produce are served in its dining room, where evening diners again revel in Kilauea’s pinkish-orange glow.hawaiivolcanohouse.com; doubles from $250
