Where to buy...Niels “Shoe” Meulman
A select exhibition in a private gallery
Niels “Shoe” Meulman creates calligraphy in a way no monk ever dreamed of. Using unusual implements like brooms and umpire brushes, the Dutch street artist slathers painted messages onto walls in a style he’s termed “Calligraffiti.” His new show, “Unism,” displays his flourish-laden lettering on canvases, walls, and a six-door Cadillac limousine he’s had shipped from New York. Shoe’s slapdash style at first seems transgressive, but the black-letter script that appears in all his works has a long history: It was even used for the movable type that Johannes Gutenberg chose when he printed his famous Bible. At White Walls, 886 Geary St., San Francisco, (415) 931-1500. Prices range from $4,000 to $10,000.
