WATCH: Steve Jobs considers his legacy in an unreleased clip from 1994

"This is not a field where one paints a painting that will be looked at for centuries."

Here's a young Steve Jobs back in 1994 talking about his legacy in the computer business — but he may as well have been speaking in the iPhone era. At the time, Jobs was heading up a computer company called NeXT, and working with Pixar to develop Toy Story, years before his triumphant return to Apple in 1997.

"This is not a field where one paints a painting that will be looked at for centuries," he says. "This is a field where one does one's work, and then in ten years, it's obsolete."

The footage is part of a short film called Steve Jobs: Visionary Entrepreneur, which was just released by the Silicon Valley Historical Association. Jobs is asked a series of questions and gives advice to young entrepreneurs. "It's sort of like sediments of rocks. You're building up a mountain, and you get to contribute your little layer of sedimentary rock to make the mountain that much higher," says Jobs. "But no one on the surface — unless they have X-ray vision — will see your sediment."

Here's a separate clip that's been circulating for a few years (ostensibly from the same interview), in which Jobs talks about his life's philosophy.
