The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom: More camera than phone?

Say cheese!

Smartphones are rendering point-and-shoots more obsolete every day, which is why it's perfectly okay to feel some cognitive dissonance gazing upon Samsung's latest variation of the Galaxy S4. Joining the original Galaxy S4, the S4 Mini, and the Galaxy S4 Active is the newly announced Galaxy S4 Zoom, which looks more like a camera than it does a smartphone.

You'll notice that the Zoom's defining feature is a 10x optical zoom lens with a f/3.1 aperture that attaches to a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, which is about what you'd get in a lower-tier point-and-shoot in the $100 to $200 range.

But there's a phone under there, too. It comes with a 4.3-inch qHD screen, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, LTE, and Android 4.2 Jellybean — not quite up to par with the Galaxy S4 spec-wise. It's more in line with the S4 Mini.

But like last year's Galaxy Camera (which is a little too expensive) or Nokia's 808 PureView, the Zoom is a pretty great idea, especially since it provides a direct portal to the places you're likely to post pictures anyway — Instagram, Facebook, etc. Sure, it's a little goofy looking. But plenty of people are using their phones to snap photos more than any other activity. As long as you don't mind holding a camera to your face when you're trying to call someone, this could be the wacky phone-camera hybrid for you.
