Daft Punk: Random Access Memories

Daft Punk's “wildly ambitious” new album is “in its own crazy way, a triumph.”

Random Access Memories is, in its own crazy way, a triumph,” said Geeta Dayal in Slate.com. Though many Daft Punk fans may be disappointed that the duo’s first studio album in eight years isn’t loaded with synth-driven dance-floor anthems, the “wildly ambitious” record we’ve gotten instead is a 1970s-style rock opera for our time—“as goofy and overblown as it is charming.” Having already taught rock fans that electronic dance music can be cool, Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter now seem determined to resurrect the grandiosity of disco-era pop, said Spencer Kornhaber in TheAtlantic.com. For the most danceable tracks here, they brought in Chic’s guitarist Nile Rodgers and session players from Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall, then got vocals from current stars like Pharrell Williams. Even when the beat slows, the purposely schlocky music on this album is “beautiful in the most literal sense, where sensory experience outranks danceability.” It breaks no new ground, but it’s “intermittently spectacular.”
