Aaron Neville: My True Story

Listening to Aaron Neville sing doo-wop is “like being cuddled by a cloud.”

Listening to Aaron Neville sing doo-wop is “like being cuddled by a cloud,” said Sarah Rodman in The Boston Globe. The 72-year-old soul legend has waited decades to record an album of doo-wop covers, and he hasn’t wasted his chance. “Backed by an air-tight band of all-stars” including guitarist Keith Richards and saxophonist Lenny Pickett, he uses his “peerless voice” to make every track swing, from “Under the Boardwalk” to “Tears on My Pillow.” The supporting talent is key to the album’s success, said Gary Graff in the San Jose Mercury News. Several singers of the doo-wop era provide backing vocals, and “the arrangements bring the band up in the mix more than in the originals.” The tactic showcases the “sharp six-string interplay” between Richards and Greg Leisz as well as “some tasteful saxophone and flute solos” from Pickett. No one would have predicted that “the first landmark album of 2013” would be a doo-wop record. Yet My True Story “makes a legendary part of pop history sound fresh again.”
