Hotel of the week: The Stanley Hotel

Estes Park, Colo.
This 1909 Georgian-style hotel inspired Stephen King’s The Shining, “but King is not the only traveler to succumb to the Stanley’s lure,” said Linda Kay Nathan in Condé Nast Traveler. Panoramic views of the Rockies draw many, as does the feel of a more stately era. Some guests also hope to bump into spooky apparitions. The ghost of original owner F.O. Stanley, co-inventor of the Stanley Steamer, is said to roam the halls, and his wife, Flora, has been heard playing the ballroom piano. The hotel plays up such tales with a year-round haunted tour.
