Fiona Apple: The Idler Wheel…

The Idler Wheel “may be Apple’s best album yet.”

****

“Music this painfully good just doesn’t come around that often,” said Dan DeLuca in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Fiona Apple herself has only released four albums since her 1996 debut, and this time, the 34-year-old’s drawn-out creative process has resulted in “uneasy” but thrilling listening. The Idler Wheel “may be Apple’s best album yet,” even though it seems to “go out of its way to make you not like it,” said Allison Stewart in The Washington Post. “These are acoustic ballads with bared teeth, draped over skeleton frames of piano and oddball percussion.” They revel in dissonance and often trail off awkwardly, as if “calculated to expose every nerve ending.” Apple has never shied from singing uncomfortable truths—like resentment, heartbreak, and lust—and here she also takes “palpable, carnal pleasure in the warping and bending of words.” Though all this makes for a challenging listen, the rewards of sticking with this record are great. ”It gets better every time you hear it.”
