Where to buy...Phil Toledano

A select exhibition in a private gallery

Phil Toledano’s latest photographs give classical art an extreme makeover. For his new series, the New York–based artist selected subjects who had sought to enhance their physical attractiveness through cosmetic surgery. Men and women with collagen-engorged lips and Brobdingnagian breast or pec implants pose seminude or nude, and are shot in a chiaroscuro style that mimics Renaissance portrait painting. Viewed side by side, Toledano’s altered faces and bodies have a disconcerting homogeneity. Are his subjects beautiful or freakish? The answer, as ever, remains in the eye of the beholder. At Kopeikin Gallery, 2766 S. La Cienega Blvd., Culver City, Calif., (310) 559-0800. Prices range from $3,000 to $4,50
