Conservatives lose trust in science
Conservative Americans are losing trust in science, a University of North Carolina study found. In 1974, 48 percent of conservatives reported “a great deal of trust’’ in the scientific community—about the same as liberals. But by 2010, only 35 percent of conservatives reported that level of trust. Liberals have remained constant at 47 percent, and independents at 42 percent.

Lottery ticket sales reach one million per hour
Tickets for last week’s $640 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot, the largest in history, were selling at the rate of one million per hour in the 48 hours before the drawing. A 2008 study found that households with annual incomes less than $13,000 spend an average of 9 percent of their money on lottery tickets.

Student loans for Americans over age 60
Americans age 60 or over still owe $36 billion on student loans, according to new research. Some older Americans are still paying off their original loans, others took on new debt after returning to school, and many have co-signed for loans with their children or grandchildren.
