United Kingdom: No leftists left in America
Imagine the political spectrum as a 12-inch ruler, with Trotsky at 1 and Genghis Khan at 12.

Imagine the political spectrum as a 12-inch ruler, said Walter Ellis. If Trotsky, for example, is at 1 and Genghis Khan is at 12, then Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron, leader of the Conservatives, falls at about 7. The British House of Commons covers a spread between 4 and 9, with most members clustering right in the middle. Now measure U.S. politics with that ruler, and “a very different, and quite frightening, picture emerges.” Barack Obama is a fraction to the right of Cameron, but most of his country’s leaders are way out there. The U.S. Congress starts at 6 and goes up from there. There is simply no Left in America. “There is only the moderate Right, which is most Democrats, and the merged religious/financial Right, which is most Republicans.” One of the presidential candidates, Rick Santorum, is actually a clear 10 who says he “throws up at the mere mention of the separation of church and state.” Thankfully, most analysts don’t think he’ll win; Obama is favored over whichever Republican opposes him. “But the stage will have been set for a fundamentalist takeover in 2016,” when the far-right crazies “slug it out for the honor of turning America up to 11.”
