The week’s other openings

Follies; Satchmo at the Waldorf; The Hollow

FolliesMarquis Theatre, New York(877) 250-2929When this musical revival opened in Washington before its Broadway run, “we liked it but didn’t love it,” said The New York Observer. Now, thanks to a flawless set and a string of “genuine showstoppers” from stars Bernadette Peters, Elaine Paige, and Jan Maxwell, the new Follies delivers a “perfect night of theater.”

Satchmo at the WaldorfLowndes Shakespeare Center, Orlando(407) 405-8091Working from a script by Wall Street Journal critic Terry Teachout, Dennis Neal creates an “engrossing” Louis Armstrong in this one-man show, said the Orlando Sentinel. But because Teachout’s plot lacks conflict, it never hits “the emotional high notes that Armstrong’s trumpet could.”

The HollowSignature Theatre, Arlington, Va.(703) 573-7328Based on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, this world premiere represents “a valid contribution to the cause of the new American musical,” said the Washington Examiner. Bolstered by a “modern and varied” score, the show manages to “illuminate even more clearly than the original did how fear can pollute a community.”
