North Korea: Putting its prettiest face forward

North Korean girls have long been touted as exceptionally beautiful, and now we know why, said South Korean journalist Sunny Lee: They’ve had some work done. North Korean restaurants, which are “dotted around Asia” as outposts to earn foreign currency for the Pyongyang regime, are known for their gorgeous waitresses. According to North Korean sources, those women were all required to have a procedure that creates an upper eyelid with a crease, “giving East Asian eyes a more Western appearance.” This was apparently done on the direct orders of dictator Kim Jong Il himself, who wants only the most stunning examples of womanhood to represent his country.
It may seem odd in such a poor country, but plastic surgery has become a trend among the North Korean elites, who find their models in pirated versions of South Korean TV dramas. It’s not only women, either: North Korean heir apparent Kim Jong Un has reportedly undergone numerous plastic surgeries, although in his case, the point isn’t necessarily to make him more attractive. His father is trying to make him “look more like his grandfather,” the nation’s founder, Kim Il Sung.
