Where to buy...Debra Baxter
The Seattle artist makes constructions out of rocks, minerals, and similar materials.
Those who wish to ascribe layered meaning to Debra Baxter’s diminutive sculptures have more than adequate fodder. The Seattle artist, who makes constructions out of rocks, minerals, and similar materials, has been candid about her childhood obsession with the crystal fortress in the movie Superman. She gives her works such titles as You Have to Believe We Are Magic (Barf Bag) and Take Your Medicine. Vague echoes of phalluses, orifices, and other body parts abound, and the exhibition itself is provocatively called “Wanting Is Easier Than Having.” The alternative is to ignore all the programmatic blather and simply revel in the objects: The glorious craftsmanship, as meticulous as a master jeweler’s, needs no back story. At Platform Gallery, 114 3rd Ave. S., Seattle, (206) 323-2808. Through Aug. 6. Prices range from $500 to $7,500.
