Superchunk's first album in nearly a decade shows that the group is “still sparkling with ideas.”

Superchunk has released its first album in nearly a decade, but “don’t call it a comeback,” said Jessica Hopper in The Village Voice. The North Carolina indie rockers who were synonymous with “college rock” in the early 1990s aren’t holding on to the past. “Vigorous and kicking,” Majesty Shredding is the sound of a band “still sparkling with ideas.” These 11 songs crackle with energy and layers of distortion, recalling Superchunk’s earlier music “without trying to match it,” said Stephen Deusner in The Washington Post. The band shows its years “without trying to erase them.” Majesty Shredding is truly majestic, from the “fountain-of-youth fun” of “Digging for Something” to the imposing closer “Everything at Once,” said Marc Hawthorne in the A.V. Club. This is exactly what’s always been expected from the band: “an album on which every song sounds as inspired as the next.”
