Where to buy … Retratos Pintados

Yossi Milo GalleryNew York

In Brazil, the tradition of the retrato pintado dates to the late 1800s, when color photography was unheard of. To glamorize formal portraits, families hired local artisans who painted over black-and-white photographs to create bright, simple compositions with naturalistic faces. The lapels of one young man’s blazer unexpectedly take on a cubist angularity, for instance, while the hot pink dress of a young girl leaps out of the frame. The subjects’ serious demeanors contrast with playful imagery, producing pictures that are folk art and pop art, all at once. 525 W. 25th St., (212) 414-0370. Through Sept. 18. Prices range from $1,800 to $3,500.
