Where to buy … John Waters: Rush

Filmmaker John Waters’ artwork is on exhibit at the Rena Bransten Gallery in San Francisco.

Rena Bransten GallerySan Francisco

If you could step inside filmmaker John Waters’ brain, it might look like this new exhibit of his artworks. Or would it? Irony is essential to Waters’ aesthetic: His enormous fiberglass sculpture of a makeup jar, for instance, is presumably meant to be kitschy. But what about the photographs of mundane objects, originally props in Pecker, his satire of the art world? Should we now take them seriously? Only in A Passion for Audrey (Hepburn), a photo collage that places stills of the actress in invigorating juxtaposition, does his eye for beauty break entirely free of irony. 77 Geary St., (415) 982-3292. Through July 9. Prices: $4,500 and up.
