Gabourey Sidibe's 'SNL' revenge?
Some critics dismissed the riveting, plus-sized "Precious" actress as a one-trick pony. Did her "Saturday Night Live" gig prove them wrong?
Gabourey Sidibe hosted "Saturday Night Live" this weekend — a perfect opportunity to school critics who'd dismissed her grueling, Oscar-nominated turn as an obese teenager in Precious as a one-trick-pony performance. Did her "SNL" debut prove that she has what it takes to make it in show business? Not likely, says Krystal Clark in Screen Crave, who allows that Sidibe's hosting performance "wasn’t the worst we’ve ever seen." That's not her fault, says Christopher John Farley in the Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog. Sure, the "Cherry Battle" skit with Andy Sandler (see clip below) was "so not funny it hurts," but, overall, Sidibe wrung a respectable number of laughs out of the wretched material the writers threw at her.
