Tiger Woods may be fabulously wealthy and successful, said Henry A. Onwubiko, but inside he has an “inferiority complex” that is inevitable for black men in the racially polarized United States. We see this insecurity in his “pathological lust for white women.” Not one of the dozen or more women who have admitted to liaisons with the world’s greatest golfer has been black.
In fact, as far as we know, Tiger, who is one-quarter African-American, has never dated a black woman. Even as a teenager, he avoided the few black girls at his prestigious California high school, because he saw them as “anathema to his dream of becoming an honorary white man.” To appeal to white girls, he purged his speech of black idioms, and it appears that he tried “lightening his skin with cancer-causing chemicals and stretching his richly coiled hair.” In going to these lengths, Tiger was “acting from a script written and stored in his unconscious mind” by his country’s racist culture.
Tiger may have sought treatment for sex addiction, but what he really needs is to embrace his African roots. Only a “cultural rebirth” can purge him of his “self-consuming colonial mentality.”
