But by toning down the melodrama, director Amy Morton turns Odets’ tragedy from simply a study of human cruelty into one of “what happens after the hungry start eating their own.”

Playwright Pamela Glen’s “meandering reminiscence” of South Africa, from apartheid to the first democratic elections, is turned into a mesmerizing “athletic ballet” by actress Shannon Koob, said the San Jose Mercury News. Koob gives a “bravura performance,” playing 28 characters.
