Where to buy … Robert Bergman

Yossi Milo GalleryNew York

For almost four decades, photographer Robert Bergman has been taking vibrant and sharply defined portraits of everyday Americans, producing a catalogue of character studies that makes him a true heir of such masters as August Sander and Dorothea Lange. Many precise and immediate images speak evocatively of the years in which they were taken (the 1980s and ’90s, for the most part). Others are timeless: In one 1989 portrait, the rough, wary man, hunched protectively over a pair of books in his lap, seems like a figure from the Great Depression. Yet its colors and shadows are so crisp you could be forgiven for thinking it was made just this week. 525 W. 25th St., (212) 414-0370. Through Jan. 9, 2010. Prices: $12,500.
