The real meaning of the election

“The American voter is absolutely, totally, unremittingly disgusted with both political parties,” said Daniel Henninger in The Wall Street Journal.

Are voters fed up with Democratic leadership in Washington? asked Daniel Henninger in The Wall Street Journal. Yes, but the disgust expressed in last week’s election results goes “deeper than that.” The truth is that “the American voter is absolutely, totally, unremittingly disgusted with both political parties.”

Independents—who make up about 40 percent of the electorate—flocked to Barack Obama and the Democrats in 2008, but just one year later, they are distraught and disappointed. They still find it hard to believe that Washington has handed out trillions of taxpayer dollars to banks and auto companies, while our economy remains a jobless disaster and our national deficit is soaring. Last week, disgruntled voters elected Republican governors in New Jersey and Virginia, but it was incumbency they were punishing; independents remain “spooked and on the run.”

They’ll continue veering left and right like a stampeding cattle herd, until they find someone with serious ideas for reversing the ugly economic and budgetary failures of recent years. Until that leadership emerges, “volatility in America’s election returns is going to be the norm.”
