Kseniya Simonova's sand art

How a contestant on 'Ukraine's Got Talent' brought viewers to tears

Every once in a while, Web surfers trip over "a serendipitous surprise," said Andrew Malcolm in the Los Angeles Times. "This is one of those times." Sand artist Kseniya Simonova's performance on the TV talent show Ukraine's Got Talent does what the political debates of our times often don't—politics, history, human suffering during war. The YouTube clip of one Simonova performance has been viewed more than 2 million times, said Ian Johnston in Britain's Daily Telegraph. Simonova, 24, won Ukraine's Got Talent by drawing "a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II." She begins with a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, "but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated."

Instead of reading a description of Kseniya Simonova's sand drawings, said Michael van der Galien in Poligazette, do yourself a favor and watch the video. You'll see why Simonova's depiction of what Ukrainians call the Great Patriotic War—8 million to 11 million people died out of a population of 42 million—moved the audience to tears.
