James Carney has crafted the first jazz album about the economic crisis, said Matt Marshall in Allaboutjazz.com. The pianist and composer comes at the downturn aggressively, covering the “full spectrum of the recession and its impact at global, national, regional, and familial levels.” Opener “Nefarious Notions” begins with Ralph Alessi’s “‘Taps’-like” trumpet before “rising like a volcano set to explode and shower us with foretold disaster.” “Squatters” introduces the “pangs and demands” of advancing technology with electronic blips, while Peter Epstein’s sax and Alessi’s trumpet “bitch and crow for the common man.” Carney paints a “picture of turmoil, clatter, and decay.” If Ways & Means plays like a soundtrack, it’s meant to, said Nate Chinen in The New York Times. Carney conceived the project with “moving pictures in mind.” He and his cast create an intriguing reel of imaginary cinema that flickers “across a spectrum of hue and mood.”
