Let’s arm everyone in the Capitol

Isn’t it time that pro-gun congressmen “practice what they preach”? asked E.J. Dionne in The Washington Post.

Isn’t it time that pro-gun congressmen “practice what they preach”? asked E.J. Dionne. The champions of the Second Amendment just legalized the carrying of concealed weapons in national parks, and barely missed getting enough votes to give gun owners the right to carry their weapons into bars, colleges, and workplaces. Legislators who do the bidding of the National Rifle Association justify their support for these crazy proposals by claiming that “the best defense against crime is an armed citizenry.”

Yet there is one workplace where these politicians abide an absolute prohibition on guns—their own. So let’s end that double standard, and permit Americans “to exercise their Second Amendment rights” by bringing “firearms into the nation’s Capitol building.” Authorizing both legislators and tourists to stroll around fully armed would make public officials more safe, you see. What if some seething nut whips out a gun? No problem! Brave gun champions like Sens. David Vitter of Louisiana and John Barrasso of Wyoming could draw their own weapons, drop to one knee, and take out that assassin in a righteous fusillade. So go for it, senators. “Make our nation’s Capitol an island of firearms liberty in a sea of oppression.”
