Two Lovers; Eastbound & Down: The Complete First Season; Last Year at Marienbad

Two Lovers(Magnolia Home Entertainment, $29.98)Though a romance, Two Lovers is “hardly a romantic comedy,” said the Houston Chronicle. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow, this “somber” drama “avoids clichés” in favor of a poignant, emotionally acute tale about real-life love.

Eastbound & Down: The Complete First Season(HBO, $29.98)Eastbound & Down may be HBO’s funniest new series, said the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Produced by Will Ferrell, it stars Danny McBride as washed-up baseball player Kenny Powers.

Last Year at Marienbad(Criterion, $39.95)In 1961 Alain Resnais’ “perplexing” art film was “an unrivaled conversation starter,” said the Los Angeles Times. This two-disc Blu-ray set allows for endless study of the unforgettable mix of “solemn mannerisms, geometric topiary,” and fractured narrative.
