Adam Lambert and Queen

Will the "American Idol" runner-up join a legendary rock band?

Adam Lambert’s “rock ‘n roll fantasy might actually become a reality,” said Aly Semigran in Entertainment Weekly. The runner-up in this year’s American Idol competition has been suggested as an ideal candidate to take over the late Freddie Mercury’s spot as Queen’s lead singer, and now Queen guitarist Brian May says he and drummer Roger Taylor want to discuss the possibility with Lambert. When Lambert sang Queen’s “We Are the Champions” in the competition, the idea suddenly didn’t seem far-fetched.

“There are obvious, almost eerie, parallels between Lambert and the late Mercury,” said Randy McMullen in the Contra Costa Times via the San Jose Mercury News. Mercury, like the mascara-wearing Adam Lambert, was “a flashy performer with a powerful voice.” Rumors have swirled around Lambert’s sexuality, and Mercury “was gay but went to pains to keep his private life private.”

Adam Lambert could certainly do well with Queen, said Brian Mansfield in USA Today. “And it might be great for Queen.” But Lambert should pass. With his voice he can sing anything. He should make his mark on his own, not with a band that hasn’t done anything musically relevant in 20 years.
