Canada: When parents keep their kids ignorant

Is the Alberta government “turning the province into a haven for hillbilly values?” said Michael Platt. A new bill would amend Alberta’s human-rights act to give parents “the right to yank their kids from classes they deem objectionable”—such as the ones that teach evolution or sex education. “One wonders what kind of backwater lobby group the province is hoping to please with this obtuse bit of governance.”

Still, the many Albertans who have registered outrage over the bill may be overreacting. After all, racists and fundamentalists will teach their children to think like they do despite the best efforts of our schools. If Dad hates blacks and gays, Junior probably will, too. “If Mommy thinks the world is 6,500 years old and great-great-grandpa rode a dinosaur to work, Junior’s going to believe the same.”

It’s better to let those people opt out of classes than to do what the Americans do—watering down the curriculum to teach “all sides” of an issue, as if creationism were just as likely to be true as evolution. The bill should pass. And then kids “should pray that their parents fundamentally oppose trigonometry.”
