Humans invade another planet.

Battle for Terra isn’t “worth fighting”—or seeing, said Bill Goodykoontz in The Arizona Republic. The “drab,” computer-animated adventure takes its inspiration from H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds. In this twist on the “invasion” tale, humans are the aliens who try to colonize a peaceful planet—Terra—after destroying Earth in a brutal war. The production itself is more imaginative than the story, said Dan Kois in The Washington Post. In this independently produced film, director Aristomenis Tsirbas makes “effective use” of 3-D during explosive battle scenes and dreamy atmospheric shots. While guaranteed to amuse the kids, the effects can’t hide the stiff, “poorly written dialogue and implausible plot.” If parents look past that, however, they will find a “thoughtful but muddled tale of clashing cultures.” In fact, Tsirbas poses moral dilemmas that add considerable dimension to his sci-fi fable, said Justin Berton in the San Francisco Chronicle. In that respect, the film “says more about the real world” and the “future we could inhabit” than most kids’ movies even attempt to say.
