Matthew McConaughey: ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past’

Does this reworking of 'A Christmas Carol' generate laughs, or despair?

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past “is the kind of breezy fantasy about recognizing true love and courting redemption that inspires misanthropy,” said David Fear in Time Out London. Matthew McConaughey stars as a womanizer who must face up to his past transgressions in this rip-off of A Christmas Carol. Hopefully, “one day, those behind this rancid farce will have to deal with theirs.” (watch the trailer for Ghosts of Girlfriends Past)

This movie “indulges in some of the most hackneyed hokum this side of a medicine show,” said Bill Gibron in Pop Matters. But “when it sticks to the interpersonal stuff, the emotional links between old lovers, close brothers, and the family that supports both, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is quite tolerable.”

It’s more than tolerable, said Peter Howell in the Toronto Star, it’s “a pleasure to watch.” It’s hard to think of another recent romantic comedy that’s “had such wicked fun with formula,” and “you've got to love a movie that so eagerly assassinates its leading man's cuddly image.”
