Frozen River; The Exterminating Angel; Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and the Drum

Frozen River(Sony, $19.99)Melissa Leo is a “revelation” in director Courtney Hunt’s first feature, said Entertainment Weekly. As a struggling single mother, the Oscar nominee “turned what could’ve been kitchen-sink clichés into a tiny miracle of human resilience.”

The Exterminating Angel(Criterion, $31.96)Luis Buñuel’s 1962 film about a bourgeois dinner party “still gets under your skin,” said Filmcritic.com. A “tough-minded, barbed satire with all the surrealist trimmings,” it helped revive the director’s career. Extras include a documentary and interviews.

Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and the Drum(Koch Vision, $19.99)In 2007, Joni Mitchell and the Alberta Ballet Company produced an “innovative” ballet featuring her songs, said The Washington Post. The performance captured here is “visually striking”—and a joy to listen to.
