“The time has come for the Mummy franchise to be truly mummified,” said Todd McCarthy in Variety. It’s been seven years since the release of the last film, The Mummy Returns, and in the meantime this action-adventure series has shed most of the traits that made it appealing. Besides losing its original writer-director, Stephen Sommers, and lead Rachel Weisz (who’s been replaced by Maria Bello), there’s not a mummy to be found throughout Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Some essential elements remain, including leading man Brendan Fraser, but “reheating the ingredients can’t disguise how stale they are.” Director Rob Cohen tries hard to liven things up, said Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times. He packs in “some 1,000 visual effects” and stages several lavish set pieces, but “bigger, however, does not necessarily mean better.” The Mummy will always be the “B-movie version of the Indiana Jones films,” said Stephen Holden in The New York Times. This thin yarn about Fraser and the missus being called out of retirement to help their son is nothing but a “frantic, cluttered mess.”
