Why our young people are flocking abroad

New Zealand is starting to look like

New Zealand is starting to look like “a sinking ship,” said Bruce Simpson in the Wellington Aardvark Daily. We’ve been “charging our own kids a king’s ransom for their university education and crippling them with debt that almost forces them to work overseas.” As a result, our college graduates are “jumping the ditch” to Australia “at record rates,” in search of jobs that will enable them to pay off their loans. Back home, we’re left with too few skilled workers to keep our economy going. The government’s response has been to look abroad. It is “trying to recruit Britain’s best and brightest to come enjoy the Kiwi lifestyle.” Given that this lifestyle offers “lower wages and lesser opportunities for work variety or career advancement,” I doubt there will be many takers. A better approach might be to offer Kiwi graduates a deep reduction in their student loans if they stay here to work. Maybe then our kids would “hang around long enough to allow this country to gain the full benefit of their education and training.”
