For all you nervous college applicants out there, here’s one word of advice, said Elinor Lipman. Relax. This spring, as usual, uncounted thousands of high school seniors are sweating by their mailboxes, waiting to learn if they’ve been accepted by the school of their choice. If not, they fear, their lives will be ruined, their careers aborted, their fortunes dashed. It’s not so. Chances are, if you’re bright enough to be going to college in the first place, “you’ll enjoy the same success and happiness whether you end up at Bates, Bowdoin, or Ball State.” In the end, the admissions game is so fraught with favoritism, the quest for diversity, and other imponderables that a “blindfolded admissions officer” picking names out of a hat would do as good a job of determining each incoming class. And if you do good work while in college, no one will care where you do it. When I was 20, a friend predicted that by the time I was 30, no one would even ask where I had gone to school. “Ridiculous, I thought. She turned out to be right.”
