An excavation for a major new subway station in Rome has uncovered unexpected archaeological treasures, said Marta Falconi in the Associated Press. The discoveries, unveiled last week, included a ninth-century kitchen, “Roman taverns, and 16th-century palace foundations” beneath the Piazza Venezia, a transportation hub near the famous monuments of the city’s ancient Forum. Numerous ninth-century artifacts, including pots, pans, and ovens, may shed light on how everyday Romans lived during the centuries following the Roman Empire’s collapse. “The medieval and Renaissance finds that were brought to light in Piazza Venezia are extremely important for their rarity,” said archaeologist Mirella Serlorenzi. In recent days, protestors have called for the work on the subway station to cease, said Rome’s La Repubblica. Continued excavations could endanger still-buried structures. But authorities say that archaeologists have been given unprecedented control over how and where construction will proceed.
