Michigan and Florida should stop whining

You don

Steve Chapman
Chicago Tribune

You don’t change the rules in the middle of a game, said Steve Chapman. That’s why Florida and Michigan should stop complaining that they’ve lost their chance to send voting delegates to this summer’s Democratic National Convention. Back in 2006, the Democratic Party established clear rules about when states could hold primaries, to prevent the chaos of states all rushing to vote first. But officials in Florida and Michigan, jealous of the attention Iowa and New Hampshire get, defiantly moved up their primaries to January. To their surprise, party officials held firm and refused to seat these renegade states’ delegates at their convention. The Democratic presidential candidates, meanwhile, agreed not to campaign in either state. Now that only about 100 delegates separate Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, both states’ governors are complaining about their voters being “disenfranchised,” and they’re clamoring for a second chance to hold valid primaries. But these states have no one to blame but themselves. If playing by the rules makes Florida and Michigan voters unhappy, “I can speak for most people in the rest of the country in saying: We don’t care.”
