Why we care about the Oscars this year

Normally, Ireland wouldn’t care whether or not the Oscars were shown with glittery pomp, said Sarah Caden in the Dublin Irish Independent. In any other year, the screenwriters’ strike that threatens to cancel the Oscars wouldn’t even register here. But this year, “a resurgence of the Irish means we have a vested interest in the show going on.” One of the nominees for Best Supporting Actress is Saoirse Ronan, a 13-year-old from County Carlow, for her role in Atonement. The young Ronan “is probably our greatest hope of glory since the golden days of My Left Foot,” which gathered nominations for the Irish director and screenwriter, and wins for an Irish actress and for “adopted Irishman” Daniel Day-Lewis. Day-Lewis is up for Best Actor again, this time for There Will Be Blood. We also have Irish contenders up for Cinematography and Best Achievement in Music. So we’re all pulling for the writers and studios to patch up their differences in time for the ceremony. Provided, that is, that “they find room to embrace our lot.”
