Dov Charney

Dov CharneyAmerican Apparel CEO Dov Charney says there’s a perfectly good reason that he attended company meetings while wearing nothing but a garment that barely covered his privates, said Carla Hall in the Los Angeles Times. It “was a product we were considering—and I was in fit condition for it,” Charney said, noting that he’s 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds. But former American Apparel sales executive Mary Nelson doesn’t buy that explanation. She’s suing Charney and American Apparel for sexual harassment, accusing Charney of using sexually explicit language and creating a “hostile work environment.” Charney has been here before. Two earlier sexual harassment suits against him were settled, and another was dismissed. Charney’s lawyers contend that his actions have to be considered in light of American Apparel’s culture, which they admit is “sexually charged.” That it is. Journalist Claudine Ko, who profiled Charney in 2004 for the now-defunct magazine Jane, reported that he masturbated in front of her during their interviews. Asked about that article, Charney said he thought it was “two people having a private time.”
