Why the GOP would prefer Hillary

Which Democrat will be more beatable in November? That

Which Democrat will be more beatable in November? That’s the question Republicans are asking one another, said Kimberley A. Strassel, as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton exchange punches in “a dirty street fight” for the nomination. Clinton is the opponent we’re most confident of beating. True, she’s very smart and strategic, and she’d run a formidable and ruthless campaign, but “her long years under the national klieg lights have given the GOP an intricate sense of her weaknesses.” Her national disapproval ratings are in the mid- to high-40s, and Republicans believe that “with just a little negative advertising,” they could push that figure above 50 percent. Obama’s sudden rise has surprised most Republicans, and our “great fear” is that his optimistic call for change and hope has “tapped into something deep in the American soul.” On the other hand, he’s still “a rookie,” untested in the big leagues of political warfare, and when Election Day nears, voters may be troubled by turning the country over to a man with no foreign-policy or managerial experience. Either candidate will be tough, but both “are beatable.”
