Most people would consider me a political centrist, said Villanova University political science professor Robert Maranto. I believe that welfare reform helped the poor, for instance, and that the Cold War was worth fighting—not exactly fringe positions. Except, that is, in the halls of academia, where such views are “practically verboten” and where I’ve long been considered “far right.” Several recent studies confirm the extreme liberal bias in universities. Liberals and Marxists, one study just found, outnumber conservatives and libertarians by 5-to-1 in political science and 20-to-1 in anthropology and sociology. This “leftist ideological monoculture” takes a heavy toll, turning universities into “intellectually dull places’’ constrained by “progressive dogma.’’ Vigorous debate is impossible, and when bright conservatives discover that academia is a hostile environment, they fail to pursue Ph.D.s and professorships. This is a pity, especially since universities claim to treasure “diversity.’’ How about some intellectual diversity? “It’s the only way universities will earn back society’s respect.’’
