Will Republicans shrug off Rudy's latest scandal?

Up to now, Republican voters largely have been willing to overlook Rudy Giuliani

Michael GoodwinNew York Daily News

Up to now, Republican voters largely have been willing to overlook Rudy Giuliani’s messy personal life, said Michael Goodwin. But now that willingness will receive the ultimate test. A press report revealed last week that when he was a married mayor, Giuliani billed New York City taxpayers for security expenses for weekend trysts with Judith Nathan, his then-mistress and now wife. Whenever he snuck out to Nathan’s condo in the Hamptons, Giuliani brought along a security detail of several New York City cops, who were fed and put up at hotels. The expenses for the cops—totaling tens of thousands of dollars—were, conveniently, billed to obscure city agencies and kept from public knowledge, until now. For months, Giuliani has been the GOP front-runner in most national polls, based on his crime-fighting record and heroic image from 9/11. But as the many skeletons from his past come “tumbling out of the closet,” his poll numbers are dropping. News that he billed taxpayers to guard him during extramarital escapades won’t help. In coming weeks, more embarrassing details may emerge. Giuliani’s many enemies now “smell blood.”
