Karl Benjamin: Dance the Line Louis Stern, Los Angeles

It’s hard to believe Karl Benjamin was ever part of an artistic movement known as “hard-edged abstraction.” Most of his paintings have the laid-back serenity you’d expect from a Southern California artist, and he’s never shied away from soft, muted colors. Much of the 81-year-old’s career was dedicated to experiments with repetitive geometric shapes, built up from squares, lines, or circles. But his earliest and latest works are the highlights here, boldly breaking the grid into jagged jumbles that vibrate with energy. 9002 Melrose Ave., through Dec. 22. Prices range from $20,000 to $60,000.
