Don’t Believe the Truth

This album turns things around entirely, bringing them back to their fruitful reworkings of more original bands.

The last two albums by this noisy British band 'œwere awful, bordering on the unlistenable,' said Glenn Gamboa in Newsday. Led by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, Oasis had two solid amped-up Beatles-esque albums in the 1990s, which launched the new British rock invasion. But they quickly nosedived into experimental pastiche and self-parody. This album turns things around entirely, bringing them back to their fruitful reworkings of more original bands. The first single, 'œLyla,' features Liam's 'œwhining British drawl in fine form,' while Noel's guitar evokes 'œthe Kinks, the Stones, and the Beatles in a neat little pseudo-psychedelic package.' Oasis has long 'œplagiarized classic British rock with baldfaced brio,' said Scott Galupo in The Washington Times. So a return to form means they are reworking great bands with enough of their own flair. The melodies are 'œgleaming, simple, anthemic,' and the guitars are turned up loud. Thoroughly reinvigorated, the band is 'œcracking with energy, drenched in hooks, and bristling with roguish charm,' said Joan Anderman in The Boston Globe. They belt songs ranging from rude pop anthems to sweetly meditative odes to friendship, like their much-beloved Beatles. But now the Fab Four obsession seems 'œmore a gift than an affliction.'
