Imposing the 25% penalty tariff, Donald Trump accused India of "buying massive amounts of Russian oil" and "selling it on the open market for big profits". India's foreign ministry said the punitive measures, which in addition to existing tariffs will see levies on Indian exports to the US rise as high as 50%, were "unjustified and unreasonable".

2. Starfish

A bacteria related to cholera was found to be behind the deaths of over five billion sea stars along the Pacific Coast of North America since 2013. The disease devastated more than 20 species, with sunflower sea stars hit hardest, losing over 90% of their population.

3. Temple Mount

Ben-Gvir, a hardliner in Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet, led a group of more than 1,000 worshippers in prayer and singing outside the Al Aqsa Mosque, on top of Temple Mount. Believed to be the location of King Solomon's temple, the hill in the heart of Jerusalem's Old City is home to holy sites for Muslims and Jews.

4. 18

The Department of Homeland Security has changed the minimum age requirement and is now accepting applications from anyone 18 years or older to become an ICE agent, in a bid to quickly hire 10,000 new recruits. Previously, applicants were required to be between 21 and 40 years old.

5. Gonorrhoea

A new vaccine reduces the risk of infection by up to 40%, and has been rolled out in sexual health clinics nationwide starting this week. Last year, 71,802 people in England were diagnosed with gonorrhoea, amid a rise in antibiotic-resistant strains of the sexually transmitted disease.

6. Lithium

Researchers from Harvard Medical School found that lithium depletion in the brain plays a key role in the development of Alzheimer's disease. The study also showed that small doses of lithium could reverse memory loss in ageing mice.

7. Argentina

The footage from the exploration of the Mar del Plata gorge, off the coast of Buenos Aires, was meant only for marine biologists – but it has been attracting more than 1.6 million views a day on YouTube, and dominating TV news broadcasts. 8. Paris

The City of Light was ranked the world's most stressful city to visit. The city crams more than 47 million annual visitors into just 40 square miles, making it even more densely touristed than New York City.

9. Mick Taylor

Taylor claims that Keith Richards gave him the 1959 Gibson Les Paul in 1967, and that he recognised it when the museum unveiled it in May by its distinctive "starburst" finish. The museum says the guitar was owned by Richards until 1971, but that it has no evidence that it had ever belonged to Taylor.

10. Bear

The team's blue-haired troll mascot, along with a player and film crew, were fly-fishing in Alaska's Katmai National Park for a youth ice hockey promo video when a brown bear suddenly charged toward them. The bear abruptly stopped and turned away as the mascot and film crew returned to shore.

Lindsey and Tim Pierce welcomed a healthy son, Thaddeus, whose "life" began more than 30 years ago as one of several embryos created for Linda Archerd and her husband, who were undergoing IVF. The US Senate has granted federal status to the Internet Archive, officially making it part of a massive library network that the public can access. The nonprofit organisation is best known for its collection of archived digital data, including websites, software and music.

3. Michelle Agyemang

Arsenal forward Agyemang, whose Ghanaian surname means "Saviour of Nations", came on in the 86th minute against Italy to score a stoppage-time equaliser, before fellow late substitute Chloe Kelly scored the winner in extra-time. England's women now face Spain in Sunday night's final.

4. Wipha

Typhoon Wipha made landfall in northern Vietnam on Tuesday, bringing 60mph winds and heavy rain. In the Philippines, Wipha intensified seasonal monsoon rains, triggering widespread flooding and forcing 80,000 people into emergency shelters. The typhoon has also threatened parts of Taiwan and southern China.

Although 10,000 is commonly cited as the "magic number", only 7,000 could be sufficient to feel the health benefits of walking. A large meta-analysis published in The Lancet Public Health found that those who walked 7,000 steps per day had a significantly lower risk of developing a range of serious conditions, including dementia, depression and type 2 diabetes, compared to those who walked 2,000 steps per day.

A director of a recruitment company and two associates were sentenced by a French court on Monday after being convicted of trafficking undocumented migrants to work in vineyards. The migrant labourers, who worked 13-hour days and were housed in "appalling" conditions, picked grapes that were then sold on to as many as 14 champagne houses.

9. Skincare

Girlguiding UK says the new badges reflect the diverse interests of modern girls. The youngest Rainbows guides can gain a badge for "rescuing bees" while older Rangers are able to express their passion for "fandoms". The new badges also include more traditional pursuits like gardening, crafting and music, while the "hostess" badge – introduced in the 1960s and retired in 2018 – has been revived as the "celebrations" badge.

A CBS/YouGov survey of 2,343 Americans found 47% of male respondents approve of the president's performance – down from the 54% who backed him before the 2024 election. Inflation worries appear to be fuelling the fall-off, with 65% of men polled saying Trump has not done enough to lower prices.

1. Druze

Israel's bombs targeted Syria's defence ministry, after Syrian forces engaged in violent clashes with a Druze militia in the southern city of Suwayda. Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel – home to a large Druze minority – was acting to "save our Druze brothers", but Syria's interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa accused Israel of trying to "sow division".

2. Grand Canyon Lodge

The White Sage and Dragon Bravo wildfires in Arizona have burned more than 40,000 acres and destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, built in 1937, along with up to 80 other structures on the North Rim. No injuries have been reported.

3. €2 trillion

Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said the 2028-2034 draft budget was the "most ambitious ever proposed". MEPs and member states will need to sign off on the package, equivalent to 1.26% of the bloc's gross national income, for it to come into effect when the current funding deal expires.

4. Elmo

The children's show moved quickly to regain control of Elmo's X account after it was hacked and used to share racist and antisemitic messages with its 650,000 followers. The posts were deleted, and Elmo returned with a message saying, "Thank you for being kind to Elmo and all the people in your neighborhood. Elmo loves you."

5. Portugal

Despite a late goal from Telma Encarnação, Portugal lost 1-2 to Belgium at Switzerland's Stade de Tourbillon, finishing at the bottom of Group B. The group's runners-up, Italy, became the first side to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Norway on Wednesday.

6. Unreleased music

Thieves broke into a car used by the Beyoncé's choreographer, stealing a laptop with unreleased music and tour plans just days before the start of the singer's "Cowboy Carter" tour. Atlanta police have issued an arrest warrant, although the suspect's identity remains unknown.

7. Strawberries

Donald Tusk shared the image of himself tucking into a plate of penne topped with chopped strawberries and a generous dollop of cream. The unusual meal was a tribute to Polish Wimbledon champion Iga Świątek, who had revealed her fondness for pasta with strawberries.

8. Hiding in a laundry bag

The 20-year-old inmate escaped from a jail in Corbas, France, by hiding in the laundry bag of a cellmate who was being released. The escapee was captured near Lyon the next day after 24 hours on the run.

9. "Severance"

Apple TV's surreal sci-fi satire is nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, as well as scoring individual acting nominations for lead Adam Scott and co-stars Britt Lower, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Zach Cherry and Tramell Tillman. Gritty Batman spin-off "The Penguin" was the next most-nominated, with 24, followed by "The Studio" and "The White Lotus" with 23 each.
