Mick Taylor

Taylor claims that Keith Richards gave him the 1959 Gibson Les Paul in 1967, and that he recognised it when the museum unveiled it in May by its distinctive "starburst" finish. Kananaskis

Despite – or perhaps because of – the Albertan mountain town's low profile, this was the second time Kananaskis has hosted a G7 conference. The Kananaskis Village resort, around 50 miles west of Calgary, was also the setting for the 28th summit of what was then the G8, back in 2002.

2. "No Kings"

Millions of people across the US took to the streets to protest the Trump administration's mass deportations. The American Civil Liberties Union estimated that more than 5 million participants gathered at more than 2,100 sites nationwide.

3. MI6

Metreweli, currently head of technology at the UK's foreign intelligence service, will take over as its chief – or "C" – when current boss Richard Moore steps down in the autumn after a five-year term. A Cambridge graduate with a 26-year career in intelligence, she had been considered "the internal frontrunner for several years", said The Times.

4. Mount Lewotobi

Flights to and from Bali were cancelled after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a twin-peaked volcano near the island of Flores, erupted on Tuesday. Officials raised the disaster alert to the highest level as ash clouds covered the area.

5. Juventus

In a surreal scene, Donald Trump mused over the possibility of US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as players in their Juventus hoodies stood motionless behind him. He later asked general manager Damien Comolli if the Italian club would allow a woman to play in the men's team, in reference to the ongoing row over transgender people in sport.

6. Los Angeles

Federal prosecutors have charged seven men in connection with the July 2022 heist. The men are estimated to have stolen $100 million (£75 million) worth of gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and luxury watches. Two suspects were arrested on Monday, one is currently jailed in Arizona for an unrelated burglary, and the other four remain at large.

7. Ireland

The winner, an unidentified man from Munster, becomes only the second person to receive the lottery's maximum possible payout – €250 million (£213 million) – less than three months after the jackpot was won by a ticket-holder in Austria. If there is no winner after five draws at the €250 million maximum, the prize money is split between lower-tier winners.

8. Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup after defeating the Edmonton Oilers 5-1 in Game 6 of the NHL Finals. The Panthers' victory not only secures the team's second Stanley Cup title but also makes it the 10th franchise to win back-to-back championships.

9. "Evita"

Jamie Lloyd's new staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical has star Rachel Zegler emerge on to the balcony of the London Palladium to perform her show-stopping "Don't Cry For Me Argentina". While some have praised the decision as a creative twist, others have complained that it cheats theatregoers of the show's most famous number.

10. "Mona Lisa"

The plans will see the "Mona Lisa" relocated to a new exhibition within the Louvre in Paris. Visitors will need to pay an additional fee to see Leonardo da Vinci's artwork, on top of the standard admission ticket. The renovation project is expected to cost the museum €800 million (£680 million).

South Korea

Seoul suspended broadcasts of K-pop and political propaganda into North Korea via loudspeakers "as part of attempts by its new left-wing government to cool tensions" with the hermit kingdom to the north, said The Telegraph. Hours later, Pyongyang announced it would halt its rival broadcasts, ending the noisy propaganda war.

2. A "world-class hater"

ABC News suspended veteran correspondent Terry Moran over a deleted late-night social media post calling Miller a "world-class hater" who is "richly endowed with the capacity for hatred" and whose "hatreds are his spiritual nourishment".

3. Ten of the 12 activists on board – including climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and a French MEP – have been deported to their home countries, with the final two expected to follow today.

4. For deploying the National Guard

Donald Trump deployed 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 marines to Los Angeles in response to protests over raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. Governor Newsom, opposing the deployment, filed a lawsuit to block the National Guard activation and said he would also sue over the marines’ deployment, calling both actions inflammatory abuses of power.

5. SDS FC

In a thrilling final at the O2 in London, SDS FC beat MVPs United 4-3. Inspired by similar leagues in Germany and Spain, Baller League UK blends sport and entertainment, with six-a-side teams playing 30-minute indoor matches with unique rules designed to encourage exciting, viral-friendly gameplay.

6. Midjourney

Disney and Universal Pictures sued the image-generation AI platform after accusing the San Francisco start-up of "blatantly" copying characters from their most famous franchises like Star Wars, Marvel and "Frozen".

7. The event, seen as the "world's first" auction of first-generation collectible Labubus, featured a total of 48 figures.

9. Dog walking

At least 18 cities issued directives echoing an existing – although much-flouted – ban on dog walking already active in the capital, Tehran. Dog ownership has become popular among young Iranians, but it conflicts with conservative religious and cultural taboos, which view dogs as ritually unclean and not suitable as companion animals.

10. Seawater

Japanese scientists have developed a plastic that dissolves in seawater within hours as a potential solution to ocean pollution. Vladimir Putin has vowed to take revenge for the attack, and for a separate Ukrainian strike on a road and rail bridge in occupied Crimea.

2. Harvey Milk

Hegseth has ordered the US navy to rename the USNS Harvey Milk, removing the name of the pioneering gay rights activist, who was also a Korean War navy veteran. An internal memo defended the change as a move to align with Donald Trump's objectives to "reestablish the warrior culture".

3. United States

The US has overtaken Australia as the world's sweariest nation, according to a University of Queensland study. After analysing 1.7 billion words of online content from 20 English-speaking countries, researchers found Americans use profanity most frequently online, followed by the UK and Australia.

5. OnlyFans

The platform for X-rated content creators generated revenues of $6.6 billion (£4.8 billion) in the year to November 2023. But despite its eye-watering profits, investors remain wary of the reputational risk of being associated with the brand – not just for its raunchy content, but for damaging stories linking the platform to exploitation and inadequate age verification.

6. 12

Donald Trump revived his first-term travel ban targeting mostly African and Middle Eastern countries, plus three in the Americas. He has also blocked nearly all foreign students from entering the US to attend Harvard. He "justified" the ban by citing high visa overstay rates, "deficient" screening standards and a recent attack on a Jewish group unrelated to the affected nations.

7. The Netherlands

Geert Wilders pulled his Freedom Party out of the ruling coalition that has governed the country for the last 11 months, accusing his coalition partners of obstructing the party's hard-right agenda on immigration. Prime Minister Dick Schoof is to remain on a caretaker basis until a new election is held.

8. Coffee

A Harvard study that tracked nearly 50,000 women over 32 years found that those who drank caffeinated coffee were significantly more likely to maintain physical, mental and cognitive wellbeing into their 70s and older. No similar benefits were found for tea or decaffeinated coffee.

9. Terracotta Army

A 30-year-old man vaulted over a railing to access the enclosure where thousands of terracotta warriors "guard" the vast mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. The unidentified intruder, who was reportedly suffering from mental health issues, then proceeded to jostle and push the priceless statues, which are more than 1,000 years old.

10. Etna

One of the world's most active volcanoes, Etna erupted in plumes of smoke and outpourings of lava on Monday. Warnings had been issued well in advance; nobody was injured and planes continued to land and depart from nearby Catania airport.

Her hand slipped

The Élysée Palace initially suggested that the video – which shows Brigette Macron appearing to shove her husband in the face as they prepared to leave a plane in Hanoi – was fake, before pivoting to suggest that France's first couple were merely horsing around. The president himself echoed that line, claiming the pair had been "joking" and that "everybody needs to calm down".

2. It would continue to grow

The tech mogul quit his role as a "special government employee" after a judge allowed 14 states to challenge the legality of DOGE – and as Tesla shareholders demanded he refocus on the company or steps down as CEO. Musk took to social media to say the "DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government".

3. Climbing Mount Everest

Rita, a Nepalese Sherpa guide who has been leading visiting climbers to the top of the world's highest mountain since 1994, broke his own record with ascent number 31 on Tuesday. Nicknamed "Everest Man", the 55-year-old has also conquered other renowned peaks, including the world's second-highest mountain, K2.

4. Turkey

Turkey will impose a $70 fine on travellers caught crowding airplane aisles in a rush to disembark. Passengers who are seen "unfastening seat belts, standing up, opening the overhead compartments" while the plane is still taxiing, or standing before their row's turn, will have to face civil aviation authority fines.

5. 16

Sinner beat 38-year-old Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the second round at Roland Garros to take his unbeaten Grand Slam run to 16 matches. His last defeat in the major tournaments was by Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarter-final last summer. Since then Sinner has won the US and Australian Opens.

6. Birch

A section of the Birch glacier broke off and destroyed 90% of a nearby village in Switzerland. The 300 residents of Blatten had been evacuated days earlier after geologists warned that the 52-million-cubic-foot glacier was unstable. Only one person has been reported missing.

7. France and Indonesia

Emmanuel Macron and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called for a two-state solution, with an independent Israel and Palestine. Subianto said his country will open diplomatic ties with Israel if it recognises a Palestinian state. France is to co-host a UN conference on Gaza in New York with Saudi Arabia next month.

8. Adidas Gazelles

Trudeau paired a traditional navy blue suit with orange-striped turquoise Gazelles for the monarch's state opening of parliament in Ottawa. The startling sartorial choice has been compared to UK PM Rishi Sunak's surprising love for Adidas Sambas.

9. Brockwell Park

Campaigners have launched a fresh legal challenge after Lambeth Council gave the green light to Brockwell Park Live, a series of festivals in the south London park. Activists say that fencing off large portions of the park for commercial events over the summer prevents locals from enjoying public green spaces and causes damage to wildlife.

10. TACO

A reporter asked Donald Trump about the "TACO trade", which is an acronym for "Trump Always Chickens Out", first coined by Financial Times columnist Robert Armstrong. The term, linked to Trump's shifting tariff policies, drew a sharp response, with Trump calling the question "nasty."

But the live-action trend shows no signs of slowing. A live-action "Moana" is in production and due for release next year, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson reprising his role as Maui.

2. Drugmakers will be required to test vaccines again before approval. The plan is a shift from the previous policy recommending annual shots for everyone six months and older.

5. 12 years

A key part of Keir Starmer's "reset" deal with the bloc guarantees a continuation of EU fishing boats' access to UK waters for another 12 years. While some have hailed the agreement as the beginning of a post-Brexit era, hardcore Brexiteers have branded its closer ties with the EU a "betrayal".

6. But some teams, like the Green Bay Packers, wanted it banned for safety reasons. In the end, the proposal to ban the play failed to pass.

7. Semi-colon

According to research by language learning platform Babbel, use of the semi-colon has almost halved since 2000. The decline is being driven by a fall-off in usage among younger generations, said The Telegraph – but they are not "rejecting" the symbol; "rather, they fear using it incorrectly".

8. Mauritius

As part of the £3.4 billion deal transferring sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, Britain will lease the largest island, Diego Garcia, for 99 years to maintain a joint US-UK military base there, paying £101 million annually to do so.

9. French Guiana

Gérald Darmanin said the €400 million "supermax" jail in French Guiana, once home to France's infamous Devil's Island penal colony, will hold the most dangerous drug dealers and Islamist terrorists where they can do no harm. The move comes after a series of high-profile gang-related kidnappings, as well as attacks on jails and prison officers' homes.

10. Spain

Spain has ordered the short-term rental company to block as many as 65,935 Airbnb listings on its platform for violating rules, according to the Consumer Rights Ministry. PKK

The Kurdistan Workers' Party, known as the PKK, said it would lay down its arms after a four-decade insurgency against the Turkish state, which has claimed the lives of around 40,000 people. In a statement the group said it had "completed its historical mission" and would continue its struggle on behalf of Turkey's Kurdish minority via "democratic politics".

2. South Africa

The Trump administration welcomed the first 59 white South Africans to enter the US as refugees, sparking outrage and causing the Episcopal Church to end its refugee partnership with the government. Donald Trump claimed a "genocide" was happening against white farmers in South Africa, but this "has been strongly disputed by South Africa's government, experts and even the Afrikaner group AfriForum".

3. Nudity

An updated dress code for this year's Cannes festival specifies that "for decency reasons, nudity is prohibited". The move follows several recent high-profile incidents of celebrities baring all or nearly-all on the red carpet – notably, Bianca Censori's eye-popping see-through outfit at the Grammy Awards in February.

4. Rafał Trzaskowski

Trzaskowski, a centre-leftist and the current mayor of Warsaw, is leading the polls in round one of the presidential vote, with a second round scheduled for June. Poles are voting for a successor to Andrzej Duda, who has served two terms as president and is thus ineligible to stand again.

5. 115%

After a weekend of talks in Geneva, the US and China agreed a 90-day "pause" during which US tariffs on Chinese goods will drop from 145% to 30% and Chinese tariffs on US goods from 125% to 10%. The move represents a marked shift from Donald Trump's previously hawkish rhetoric on China tariffs, leading some commentators to suggest it amounted to a U-turn.

6. Florida

Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill banning fluoride and other additives from being added to public drinking water, calling it a measure to "protect against forced medication". Still, public health experts warn it could worsen tooth decay in children. The new bill is set to take effect in July, and will make Florida the second state after Utah to ban fluoride.

7. "Sinners"

The vampire horror movie directed by Ryan Coogler grossed $200 million in the US and Canada. Critical acclaim has helped the film become the highest-earning original film domestically since Pixar's "Coco," which made $210 million in 2017.

8. Emmanuel Macron

A crumpled white object on the table in front of the French president as he travelled to Kyiv with other world leaders on Saturday became the subject of social media speculation that it was a bag of cocaine. "This is a tissue. For blowing your nose," the Elysée Palace said on its X account, posting a close-up of the item and accusing "France's enemies" of spreading "disinformation".

9. "Doom"

"Doom: The Dark Ages", a sequel to 2016's "Doom" and 2020's "Doom: Eternal", has had a positive reaction from game critics. The Guardian's Rick Lane said it offered gamers a "fascinating reformulation" of the "Doom" franchise's core ideas – as well being a lot of "fun" to play.

10. A stricter dress code

Starbucks baristas across the US went on strike after the company introduced its new dress code, which will require them to wear solid black shirts and khaki, black or blue denim bottoms under their green aprons. The company says the change helps customers recognise staff, but workers argue that Starbucks is "focused on all the wrong things".

Carney's tough rhetoric on Donald Trump's taunts and tariffs saw the party surge in the polls – although it still fell short of the 172 seats needed for a majority.

2. Reddit

A team of researchers conducted a month-long secret experiment on Reddit users using AI chatbots to post over 1,700 comments in its r/changemyview forum. The bots used an AI data scraper to gather and analyse users' personal data without consent, raising questions on whether deception is ever justified when conducting research on human subjects.

3. Tottenham

Liverpool's victory capped a triumphant first season for manager Arne Slot, and puts the Reds alongside Manchester United as the joint most successful club in English league history. Liverpool first won the title in 1901 and are now level with United on 20.

4. Amazon

Donald Trump personally called Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos to complain after reports surfaced claiming that the company planned to list the additional cost of Trump's tariffs alongside product prices. Amazon later clarified that the idea was a misunderstanding and was never going to happen.

5. Giovanni Angelo Becciu

Becciu had insisted that, despite having his cardinal privileges taken away after being charged with financial crimes in 2020, he had the right to vote for Pope Francis' successor. But this had proven a headache for the College of Cardinals. However, the surprise emergence of letters signed by the late pontiff apparently barring Becciu from the conclave forced the disgraced cardinal to back down.

6. Humans

A team of biologists found that humans wounds take two to three times longer to heal than those on other mammals. They suggest the slower healing may have been an evolutionary trade-off when we shed fur for sweat glands.

7. Recorder

Once a staple of school bands, the recorder now "risks going the way of the lute and the harpsichord", said The Times. A survey revealed that only 16% of children aged 5-17 play the instrument today, compared to 28% in 2014. The ukelele and guitar are increasingly used in music lessons, while the overall proportion of children learning an instrument in their spare time has dropped.

8. It slipped off an aircraft carrier

An F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet was "lost at sea" when it slipped off the deck of the USS Harry S. Truman. The aircraft carrier was attempting to evade incoming fire from Houthi rebels in Yemen, but the jet plunged into the Red Sea along with the tractor towing it into the hangar bay.

9. John

Didion's reflections on her sessions with her psychiatrist – addressed to her husband, John Gregory Dunne – were found in a filing cabinet beside her desk after her death in December 2021. Didion had never indicated any intention of making them public, and the decision to do so after her death has elicited a debate about the ethics of posthumous publishing.

10. Red

Right-wing Brazilians lashed out after reports that the Brazilian Football Confederation is considering changing the national team's kit to include a red shirt for the 2026 World Cup. The colour is associated with left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

William Shakespeare

It has long been believed that Shakespeare left his wife, Anne, in Stratford-upon-Avon during his time in London, but a letter fragment addressed to "Good Mrs Shakspaire" at a London address appears to cast doubt on the assumption that theirs was a distant or unhappy marriage. The letter, from an unknown sender, asks Mrs Shakespeare to pay out a sum of money held in trust by her husband.

8. $5,000

The White House is exploring ways to encourage Americans to have children amid declining birth rates. Crimea

The US-backed plan would essentially freeze the current frontlines of the conflict, leaving Russia in control of Crimea, which it has held since invading the peninsula in 2014. Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected the notion that Ukraine would give up territory seized by Russia, but Donald Trump was unsympathetic, suggesting Zelenskyy could either accept the deal or "fight for another three years before losing the whole country".

10. 84%

The world is in the middle of its fourth known "mass bleaching event", according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The increase was largely due to a surge in Gen Z worshippers, particularly among men and ethnic minorities, with Catholic and Pentecostal congregations gaining the most new members.

4. Harvard

Harvard rejected the Trump administration's demands for oversight and internal policy changes, calling the effort an unlawful and unconstitutional overreach. In response, the government swiftly froze $2.3 billion in federal grants and contracts to the university.

5. Wine

The International Organisation of Vine and Wine, the industry's leading trade body, said that "short-term economic and geopolitical disruptions" had driven up costs for both producers and consumers. They also pointed to the effect of "long-term factors" like increased health consciousness and a diminishing wine-drinking culture, particularly among younger people.

6. Stop-offs include sites inside the UN-mandated buffer zone along the Syrian border, which was itself invaded and occupied by Israeli troops following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

8. 5.2

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck the town of Julian, in San Diego county, with tremors felt across Southern California. The quake provided an opportunity to test the state's early-warning system, which successfully alerted residents moments before the shaking began.

9. Put on deodorant

As she passed the umpire's chair, Dart claimed Boisson "smells really bad" and asked the official to tell her to put on deodorant, during what The Telegraph described as "an ill-tempered 6-0, 6-3 humbling for Dart". The umpire ignored the request. Dart apologised on Instagram later for the "heat-of-the-moment comment", picked up on courtside mics.

10. Colossal squid

The Schmidt Ocean Institute captured the first-ever footage of a colossal squid using a high-tech robot.
