Democrats: Suffering from TDS?
“The country is in the throes of a major epidemic,” said Justin Raimondo in the Los Angeles Times. “It’s called Trump Derangement Syndrome.” The president-elect’s every tweet provokes a firestorm of hysteria and hyperbole from liberals, who seem convinced 140 characters of sass will trigger Armageddon. In advanced TDS, “life resembles a dark fairy tale in which the villain—Trump—is an amalgam of the worst tyrants in history.” Indeed, Newsweek actually ran a piece titled “Just How Similar Is Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler?” Some call Trump a Manchurian candidate, a Russian agent installed by master cybercriminal Vladimir Putin. Others insist that we mustn’t “normalize” the presidentelect. Does that suggest we can’t deal with Trump through traditional democratic means? If he’s a budding Hitler, or in league with Putin, is a violent rebellion out of the question? “Unless a cure for TDS is found, this is where we’re headed.”
It’s not deranged to be horrified by Trump, said Paul Krugman in The New York Times. We’re handing power to a man who openly admires authoritarians, disdains the press and the rule of law, and “has spent his whole adult life trying to build a cult of personality.” His defiant refusal to sever his ties to his business empire means he’ll use his office “to enrich himself,” and he’s filling his Cabinet with fellow billionaires. In short, America is turning into “Trumpistan.” Trump may not be Hitler, but he’s worse than Richard Nixon, said Rick Perlstein in NewRepublic.com.Like Nixon, he’s “paranoid and vindictive,” and stays up half the night “raving against every perceived slight.” But at least Nixon was introspective, studious, and self-aware; Trump’s “soul is sicker by miles,” and “the surveillance apparatus he is about to inherit is far scarier.” Imagine what he’ll do to critics and political enemies with the God-like surveillance powers of the National Security Agency.
Get a grip, liberals, said Jim Geraghty in National Review.com.“A presidential victory by a candidate you detest isn’t supposed to be the end of the world.” Recall how quickly Repub li can fortunes reversed after Obama’s election in 2008. The “perma nent Demo cratic majority” his victory supposedly ushered in lasted all of two years. Instead of assuming a fetal position, the GOP rebuilt and now controls Washington as well as most state and local governments. So buck up, progressives, and stop crying that the sky is falling. Get to work, and your party “will have be tter days ahead.”
